The Local Food Cooperative conductss a number of activities aimed at achieving various goals and objectives. Below are some of the activities of the cooperative.

  • 1) Connecting Residents to access Local Food and Employment

    The Local Food Cooperative provides trainings for students on sustainable diets. During the trainings. The Local food cooperative provides an opportunity for students a diet of local and fresh food, local fruits and vegetables. During the training, students cook food together. This training a people connector and KMDF is grateful that it is able to play a role in the programme. The Local Food Cooperative also donates starter plants for the students to start gardens, where they can harvest fresh ingredients for their meals daily. Graduates of the program report increased self-confidence and more job offers. Over 50% of graduates of the job training programme find steady employment in Kabale Municipality and surrounding cities and towns

    The Local Food Cooperative provides an opportunity for kids in Kabale Municipality to learn about Delicious Food and its Complexities. The Local Food Cooperative provides a new way of organizing society with the goal of no exploitation, improving working & living conditions, and selling honest food at honest prices. The Local Food Cooperative addresses these same issues through a series of classes for the Business high school students from the Municipality where they practice critical thinking skills.

    The Local Food Cooperative has the power to help people redefine relationships with one another and with food source. Expanding this knowledge of where food comes from, is one step toward creating a better world. The Local Food Cooperative trains volunteers interested in teaching Harvest of the Month lessons in the local classrooms. This initiative has increased members of the food cooperative who are excited to be a part of co-op community in this particular way. The food cooperative ccontinues to support local teachers, who are increasingly bringing food into their curricula through school gardens, classroom cooking, and engaging with community farms.

  • 7) Organizing trainings for the Volunteers of the Local Food Cooperative.

    The Local Food Cooperative will train volunteers interested in teaching lessons on local food preparation. This initiative will increase members of the food cooperative who are excited to be a part of food cooperative community in this particular way.

  • 8) Provides Assistance for Local Food Systems.

    The Local Food Cooperative has a grants scheme that provides assistance to Local Food enterprises and entrepreneurship initiatives around local, healthy food production. The move is part of an overall goal of the food cooperative that envisions five main objectives: lively neighborhood markets, dynamic local food systems, sustainable solutions, strong community partners and amazing places to work. The grant scheme is an important component of growing the cooperative’s vision of a sustainable future around food for the Municipality and the region. Creating a dynamic local food system helps put ‘local’ on the map for area growers and producers. At KMDF, we think this is vitally important not only as the Local Food Cooperative continue to grow and offer local food as a primary driver for doing good business. More important to note, local food systems can be a means to build a vibrant food network of sustainability for the future. This is because food production is a jobs creator, stimulates the local economy and provides opportunities for growth and expansion.

    The Local Food Cooperative operates a food Bank and donates over fresh, delicious food to food pantries in communities every year and ensures that everyone has the good, local, healthy food we all deserve.

    Each year, the Local Food Cooperative organizers events to appreciate farmers for their role in food production. These events have turned local producers and local farmers into celebrities of sorts.
